Abstract :

This review of the literature brings together the different concepts, definitions and perspectives that have been used to study the participation of non-professionals in producing scientific knowledge in the natural sciences. We argue that “citizen science” is under-theorized, given the case-based nature of much of this literature. We start by clarifying differences between today’s citizen science projects and their ancestors in the field sciences and reflecting on the structuring effect of technological and social changes. This is followed by a short discussion of typologies of citizen science projects and the various terms used to identify contributors. Three main issues are identified: participants’ motivations, issues of expertise and different types of knowledge, and the legitimacy and quality of contributions. We draw on specific examples from our fieldwork on Web 2.0 citizen science projects conducted over several years in botany and entomology. This review highlights the multiple realities of citizen science, and points to changes in the division of labour between scientists and non-scientists, as well as the development of technological innovations that facilitate the participation of heterogeneous actors.
